ENTRY #3 Apps of Deception

Apps of Deception

We all love to have some sort of entertainment throughout our day, either by watching a video, performing an activity, or communicating with someone. The use of social media apps helps us explore many new forms of entertainment that are easily accessible.

Although these apps are user-friendly, do we know what their main objective is? We can assume that these apps were made to entertain us, but what if we knew that the main purpose of the app was to gather personal information from the user, then many of us wouldn't even have downloaded it in the first place.

This YouTube video from BBC News, informs the viewers about the app called TikTok, an app that was released in China, which is used for creating and posting short videos for entertainment purposes. After allegations were made that TikTok uses users' information and deploys it to the Chinese government many organizations and companies are banning the use of this app on company's and employees' devices (BBC News, 2023). This video presents many points of why the app is being banned, mainly because its exploits user's information to another country's government but seems biased just because the app was created in China.

There are many apps out there that do the same thing, but no one seems to care as much as they do for this app. Facebook, for example, has had allegations of releasing personal information and having outer sources use it (BBC News, 2019). Snapchat also has had allegations of collecting users' contact information and transmitting users' locations without their permission. Many of these apps are made in our own country and do the same thing but aren't treated the same way. BBC News report delivers a major issue but should include similar situations to what this app and others do or have done the same.

  2. Hi David! It is concerning how much information entertainment and social platforms want to receive from their users. I wonder what goes on behind the scenes. Your blog post was very entertaining.
